Last night we saw the cleft team and found out Ava will need tubes in her ears. She has minor hearing loss that is correctable. She had a pressure test and her ear drums did not move and that is a pretty strong indication of fluid. We have to take her for a hearing test soon, but the doctor was 99.9% sure. She definitely hears, but perhaps not as well as she could.
Dr. Baker has decided to do 2 surgeries, one on her lip and then fix her palate. Normally, he likes to fix older children in one surgery, but Ava's gum and lip are so far out that he needs to get everything in line first. He also said that way if she needs any lip revisions he can do them at the time of the palate surgery. So we will find out how soon her first surgery will be probably on Monday. Then she will heal for 3-4 months and have her palate surgery.
We see her pediatrician on Monday and I'm glad because she has had Chinese formula for the past 17 months and the amount of tainted formula in China seems to be growing daily. Over 54,000 children have been affected thus far and a few have died. Our agency has contacted their Beijing office on our behalf to find out what formula she was given. One company seems to be the worst, Sanlu, apparently having huge amounts of Melamine in their formula. The contamination has been between 0.09 mg/kg and 619 mg/kg, but batches from Sanlu Co. contained the highest levels, up to 2563 mg/kg. Melamine is usually used in plastics and is the same ingredient that the pet food contamination was about that killed several animals in this country. On a positive note, our agency said not many orphanages used their formula. Also, she seems to be fine but we'll see what the doctor has to say.
